Dermabrasion

What is dermabrasion

Is a surgical procedure performed by a surgeon or dermatologist which consist in taking layers from the skin with a specialized instrument. First the skin is frozen with a spray and a tool with a rotating head is placed over the skin.

As a consequence the top layers of the skin are removed, revealing new, smoother skin underneath. It was first created to treat scars from acne, chicken pox and others. Today the use of this procedure have expanded and is used to treat
  • acne scars

  • liver spots

  • aging skin : wrinkles

  • pre-cancerous growths

  • sun damage

  • skin lesions

  • pigmentation

  • tattoos
Dermabrasion treatment can take up to two hours, depending on the area being treated. Anesthetic and sedation may be offered if necessary. After treatment the skin will be tender and red. If in pain or discomfort, medication will be prescribed.

The skin will begin to heal at around seven-ten days. The new skin will have a pink tone at first, but will be replaced by normal skin colour after few weeks.
The skin can present the following symptoms after this treatment
  • itching

  • swollen

  • tenderness

  • stinging feeling
It can be performed as an out-patient basis, however your surgeon may consider a brief stay in the hospital. Staying out of the sun is very important and wearing sunscreen with high SPF every day is a must.

Be warned that if you are thinking on having this anti aging treatment don't take it lightly as it is considered a surgical procedure. Think about on how your skin will look until it heals completely, the discomfort and the time you will need to take off. A good qualified practitioner will give you all the information you need and things to consider before, during and after treatment, so choosing one with experience in this type of procedure is the key.
