What is a chemical peel or skin peels? Skin chemical peels consist in peeling the top layers of the skin with a chemical solution to reveal new and smoother skin underneath. A medical chemical peel can treat several skin conditions depending on the strengh of the peel.
Chemical Skin Peels Treatments
Some of the skin conditions that can be treated with this treatment are:
A chemical peel treatment can be performed on the face, hands, neck...The physician will apply a chemical solution to the skin for a short period of time. This solution will make the skin peel over the next few days, removing the skin's top layers leaving you with new, fresher skin.
My experience with peelings have been good so far but I have heard some bad experiences from people not so satisfied with the results. For that reason, is very important to choose the best qualified physician you can find in this field, follow all the guidelines given and make sure you understand what to expect from this treatment.
Is better to have it in winter because after a chemical peel procedure the skin is more sensitive to sunlight. Is very important to stay out of the sun afterwards and to wear
sunscreen
with high SPF every day, even if is not sunny.
Types Of Chemical Skin Peels
There are three types:
Light Peel
Medium Peel
Deep Peel
Light Peel
A light chemical peel uses salicylic acid, alphahydroxy acids (AHA'S),
glycolic acid
and
lactic acid
.
Glycolic facial peels are one of the most performed of this kind. Glycolic acid skin peels are known as "lunch peels" because they can be perform in as little as an hour, and you can go on with your normal life immediately.
Topical products sold over the counter can have a concentration up to 15% increasing up to 70% when used by professionals. With a light chemical peel there is no need for anesthetic. A course of treatments is recommended for better results.
During treatment you may feel a slight stinging sensation and after the skin peel your face could be slightly red, this is only temporary and will fade over the next few hours. Sometimes flaking occurs but again is only temporary. After treatment you can return to work or your every day activities.
Don't forget to stay out of the sun and to use sunscreen with a high SPF (at least 30) every day.
Medium Peel
The medium peel uses TCA (trichloroacetic acid). How tca peels work? TCA skin peels exfoliate the top layers of the skin, stimulating the production of collagen and elastin. The result is new skin that is fresher and smoother.
The concentration varies from 10% to 50%, depending on the depth of the peeling. TCA chemical peels are used to treat:
Superficial wrinkles
Dull skin
Sun damage
Uneven pigmentation
Freckles
The treatment can take up to one hour. Normally there is no need for anesthetic although sedation may be offered. During treatment you could have a burning or stinging sensation. Side effects include redness and peeling of the skin that will fade over the next few days. It will be necessary to take some time off after being treated with a TCA chemical peel.
These type of chemical skin peels work very well in people with olive skin and light brown skin. Your physician will tell you how to prepare the skin before treatment and will decide if more treatments are needed at a later time to obtain better results. Stay out of the sun and use a sunscreen with high SPF every day. Find out about the Obagi chemical peel which is an example of a TCA peel here-

Deep Chemical Peel
The deep skin peel or phenol peel is the strongest skin peel and uses carbolic acid to achieve deep exfoliation of the skin, by removing the skin's top layers. Is used to treat:
Severe sun damage
Deep wrinkles
Pre-cancerous growths
Uneven pigmentation
Scarring
Phenol peels are only used on the face and are not recommended for dark skin, people with heart problems and people with a large number of freckles. Treatment with this chemical facial peel for a full face can take up to two hours, and the skin will have a burning sensation during the procedure.
After the solution has been applied cold water is used to cool down the area and petroleum jelly is placed over the face to form a protective layer. Phenol acts as an anesthetic but sometimes general anaesthetic or sedation may be offered if necessary.
After this chemical face peel the skin will be red, swollen and crusted with a stinging feeling, and the skin will begin to flake over the next few days. After all the peeling is gone, the skin will be left with a pink colour similar to sunburn that will fade over the next few days.
The new skin will be smoother, fresher and clearer with a very pale tone and will also be very sensitive to sunlight. You must stay out of the sun and wear sunscreen with high SPF. The full benefits of the phenol peel can be seen in around three to four months and will have a long-lasting effect.
A word about phenol peels
Phenol facial chemical peels are so strong that leave the skin with a very pale tone, like bleaching effect. It is possible that the skin will never tan again, that's why phenol peels are best suited for people with pale skin.
There are risks of skin discoloration, scarring and infection. Phenol skin chemical peels are not very common but if you are thinking in having one, choose a good qualified physician who will help you to decide if this deep chemical peel is the right choice for you.
